Managing a business can become overwhelming at times. I offer office administration and project management consulting services for business owners and senior managers who are seeking to offload some of the burden that comes with the administration of their business.
Office Management
Supervision of office activities to achieve maximum expense control and productivity. Development of procedures and policies for office activities, such as filing, dictating, records maintenance, typing, word processing, faxing, and other types of information processing. Maintenance of office equipment and procurement of supplies.
Project Management
Coordination and completion of projects. Overseeing all aspects of projects. Setting of deadlines, assignment of responsibilities, and monitoring and summarization of project progress. Preparation of reports for upper management regarding project status.
BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
I began doing some simple office administration type work while working at Unlimited Fiber Output circa 1997. It consisted of basic stuff such as writing up contracts, policies, memos, copy for the web sites and corresponding with clients and vendors. Once Infomedium came about in 1999 all of the work that comes with running a small business became my responsibility. So on top of what I used to do in terms of office administration at Unlimited Fiber Output, now I had to also do accounting, invoicing, purchasing, filing records, payroll, taxes, project management, marketing, and so forth. Taking care of the office work was just as important as doing the work for the clients, but at times the workload from clients was so great that it became quite difficult to attend to both simply because there wasn't enough time in the day.
After things slowed down following the .COM bubble and attending business school became my full-time occupation I came to the conclusion that starting a small business nowadays is a job that is best handled by at least a handful of individuals with a clear division of labor. Since my education was in the discipline of business management the message from the school was very much the same. In essence business managers are responsible for planning and overseeing business activity as well as taking care of other non-production type of business activities. Quite different from what I used to do in the past.
At my most recent employer Zuma Beach Entertainment I had the opportunity to do quite a bit of project management by directing as many as 4 to 5 people at a time on projects that they were doing for my media department either full-time or part-time. The job still had a lot of overlapping responsibilities between production and administrative work activity, but it was not even remotely as diverse as the job of running Infomedium.
